Jose Rizal University regained some of its lost composure yesterday, drubbing Letran, 77-68, to remain at solo third in the 93rd NCAA men’s basketball at The Arena in San Juan City.
Tied, 12-all, after the first quarter, the Heavy Bombers banked on a second-quarter assault where they outscored the Knights, 24-15, to take a 36-27 half time lead before switching to defense.
The win not only duplicated JRU’s 65-62 first round win over Letran but also hiked its win-loss tally to 7-4.
It also soothed their wounds from a stinging 115-109 double overtime defeat to Arellano a week ago.
“It showed the character of the team,” JRU coach Vergel Meneses said. “Coming from that heartbreaking loss, it is important how we bounce back and in this game, they showed how badly they wanted to.”
Ervin Grospe scored 15 points to go with five rebounds and four assists. Teytey Teodoro added 15 points and Jed Mendoza contributed 11, seven boards and four assists to anchor the Bombers.
Mark Dela Virgen also contributed 10 points, while AbdulWahab AbdulRazak took charge inside the paint with 14 rebounds.
Letran skidded to its third straight loss for 5-6, slipping to fifth place.
JP Calvo dropped 21 points while Bong Quinto scored 12 points and hauled 12 rebounds for the Knights, but the Intramuros-based squad failed to get more from the others.
In juniors action, Kurt Reyson drilled in 20 points and Enoch Valdez hauled 15 rebounds as the Letran Squires outlasted the JRU Light Bombers, 91-87. The Squires jumped to 6-4 for third place while the Light Bombers dropped to 3-8 near the bottom despite Toby Agustin’s explosive game of 30 points.
