The University of the Philippines Pep Squad will skip for the first time the 2016 UAAP cheerdance competition, one of the most awaited events in collegiate sports, set on November 19.
In a statement posted on UP Pep Squad’s Official Facebook page, the group confirmed their non-participation in Season 79’s cheerdance event.
“Finally, we can share the news to those who have been wondering that, regretfully, we will not be part of this season’s UAAP Cheerdance Competition,” the statement said.
It can be recalled that the UP Pep Squad filed a complaint last year before the UAAP Board questioning the win of the NU Pep Squad during the Season 78. It was NU’s third straight cheerdance crown.
The group also apologized to its fans for skipping the event for the first time since the competition was included as a UAAP event in 1994.
“Though you may not all agree with us, we hope that our supporters will understand our decision and remain behind us in harnessing our freedom to prioritize our principles and the welfare of our student athletes,” the statement read.
The statement was issued right after the release of the list of order of performances for the competition on Wednesday.
The order of performances was posted on the Facebook pages of UAAP cheerdance coaches Estong Ocampo of National University and Ruf G. Rosario of Dela Salle University.
The order of performances are as follows: 1. Dela Salle University Animo Squad2. University of Santo Tomas Salinggawi Dance Troupe3. Ateneo Blue Babble Battalion4. FEU Cheering Squad5. Adamson Pep Squad6. UE Pep Squad7. NU Pep Squad
UP, one of the perennial contenders in the said competition, has eight cheerdance titles under its belt, tied with the University of Santo Tomas Salinggawi Dance Troupe.
