By Ernest HernandezThe DLSU Green Archers have their backs against the wall and need to win on Wednesday (Nov. 29) to keep its hopes for back-to-back championships alive.
One of the bright spots during game one of the UAAP Season 80 Mens’ Basketball Finals was Aljun Melecio. He feels that the loss was on his end and the rest of the team.
“Kulang sa amin yung communication sa loob ng court. And yung Ateneo, maganda yung team defense nila and execution,” said Melecio. ”Yung offensive and defensive rebounds lang naman sa Ateneo kaya nakalamang sila sa last three minutes.”
Melecio stepped up with 24 points with Ben Mbala hounded by the Ateneo defense. The Cameroonian was held to just 8 points, his career low as a Green Archer.
With Mbala grounded, Melencio knew he needed do something. He did so by drilling in shots from kick-out passes.
“Actually, alam na ni Ben yun. Kaya nag adjust din siya sa defense nila. So nakita niya yung mga outside shooters pag dino-double team siya,” said Melecio.
Melecio knows that they need to match Ateneo’s energy and chemistry. He believes that better communication inside the court is what’s missing.
“Kailangan namin mag-bounce back and mag-adjust sa execution ng Ateneo. Mas grabe ang communication nila compared sa amin,” quipped Melecio.
DLSU tries to even the series on Nov. 29 when they face Ateneo for game 2 of the UAAP Season 80 Mens’ basketball finals at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
