The Adamson Pep Squad tonight proved that last year’s surprise podium finish was no fluke as it captured this season’s UAAP Cheerdance Competition title at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Clad in a white and blue costume, Adamson imbibed a retro theme and performed to the tune of iconic hits from OPM disco group VST and Company to wow the judges and the 19,851 fans inside the arena.
Their jaw-dropping tosses, stunts and pyramids secured them 663.5 points from the judges to win their first crown but also eclipsed their bronze-medal finish last year.
“Last year was a stepping stone for us to mold the character and discipline of the team,” said Adamson Pep Squad Coach Jeremy Lorenzo, who took the reins only last year. “It’s not about how difficult our performance was but it’s about how we win the hearts of the fans.”
Adamson also pocketed P340,000 for its head-turning performance.
The University of Santo Tomas Salinggawi Dance Troupe, with its tiger get-up, leaned on its flawless dance routine to retain the silver finish for the second time with 638.5 points.
They settled for the P200,000 runner-up purse.
“Sabi ko kahit anong result, tatanggapin namin nang buo. Siyempre goal naman ng lahat, mag-gold, pero masaya na rin kami sa performance namin,” Salinggawi Dance Troupe coach Mark Chaiwalla said.
The University of the East Pep squad lived up to their “Unexpected, Unending” theme with their fiery red attire by surprisingly clinching the bronze with 634.5 points and the P140,000 cash prize.
National University Pep Squad, meanwhile, failed to defend their title and settled for fourth with 610.5 points, even as University of the Philippines Pep Squad failed to make a huge comeback and placed sixth with 575.5 points.
FEU, meanwhile, topped the Group Stunts Competition followed by Adamson and UP.
