The great Oscar De La Hoya and Argentine strongman Lucas Matthysse, who defends the world welterweight crown against Manny Pacquiao on July 15 in Malaysia, are descending into Manila next week.
De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) has the heavy-handed Matthysse under contract.
To kick off Pacquiao’s crack at Matthysse’s World Boxing Association (WBA) 147-lb title in Kuala Lumpur, the major players are staging a press conference on Wednesday afternoon.
After the press conference, Pacquiao and Matthysse and De La Hoya, are going to shoot videos that will be used in promoting the fight.
The traveling circus then proceeds to Kuala Lumpur on Thursday night on a private jet in time for the Malaysian leg of the promotional tour Friday.
Another round of filming commences before the major players head back to Manila on Saturday. De La Hoya and Gomez and Matthysse fly back to the US on Sunday.
De La Hoya will be joined by Eric Gomez, a high-ranking GBP official.
Bob Arum will send Brad Jacobs as Top Rank’s representative.
Pacquiao is rolling out the red carpet for De La Hoya, who the Filipino southpaw sent into retirement in Dec. 2008.
Matthysse (39-4 with 35 KOs), 35, was personally picked by Pacquiao to be his comeback opponent owing to the South American’s engaging style.
Pacquiao (59-7-2 with 39 KOs), 39, was upset by Australian Jeff Horn in his last fight in Brisbane in 2017.
