Eight men and two women standouts are going to be named to the boxing team to the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia, the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) said yesterday.
The composition of the touted squad has yet to be finalized as Asian Games candidates are in the thick of training for several tournaments overseas, most notably the President’s Cup in Kazakhstan which gets going next week and the Chemistry Cup in Germany in late-June.
Secretary general Ed Picson said the national team has been divided into two.
Two more events, one in Indonesia and another one in Thailand, are on the calendar but the Asiad candidates are going to Kazakhstan and Germany.
The last time in Incheon, the Philippines failed to deliver and lightweight Charly Suarez was the biggest achiever with a silver.
In 2010 in Guangzhou, fly Rey Saludar struck gold while fly Violito Payla and bantam Joan Tipon were the gold medalists in 2006 in Doha.
The national team is made up of Rogen Ladon, Ian Clark Bautista, Carlo Paalam, Mario Fernandez, James Palicte, Joel Bacho, Charly Suarez and Eumir Marcial.
Fil-British John Marvin is also a mainstay but his weight class won’t be included in the Indonesia Games slated Aug. 18-Sept. 2.
Still, Marvin has been put on the rotation since he will be competing when the country hosts the Southeast Asian Games next year.
