Alyssa Valdez and Aby Maraño spearhead the national women’s volleyball team who will see action in the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia this August.
The final list of 12 players and reserves were announced Thursday night by coach Shaq Delos Santos after deliberation with Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas Inc. officials that included President Joey Romasanta, Vice President Peter Cayco and team formation committee member Jeff Tamayo.
Maraño was earlier announced as the captain of the squad.
Joining Valdez and Maraño are Majoy Baron, Mika Reyes, Kim Fajardo, Jaja Santiago, Jia Morado, Dawn Macandili, Kianna Dy, Dindin Manabat, Cha Cruz-Behag and Ces Molina.
Setter Rhea Dimaculangan and Denden Lazaro are also selected as reserves.
While the Asian Games-bound lineup is already finalized, Romasanta said the association is still keeping the 20-player pool intact along with additional players Bea De Leon, Risa Sato and Lourdes Clemente for future international stints.
Among those tournaments is the Asian Women’s Volleyball Cup happening in September in Thailand.
This will be the first time that the country will send a women’s volleyball team to the Asian Games since the 1982 edition in New Delhi, India where it finished fifth.
The country has never won an Asian Games medal in women’s volleyball since its inception in the 1962 Jakarta edition.
