Jose Rizal University stunned last year’s bridesmaid Malayan, 80-70, to make its title campaign felt in NCAA juniors basketball at the JRU gym in Mandaluyong City.

Leaning on a homecourt advantage, the Light Bombers, which finished ninth last year, asserted their might and dominated for most parts the match by leading as many as 14 points to pick up their first win in the season.

Marwin Dionisio spearheaded JRU with a double-double performance of 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Cadell Buno and John Amores chipped in 14 and 13 points respectively while combining four 10 boards and five assists.

Malayan threatened at the end of the third quarter when it trimmed its deficit to only three, 63-60, but JRU was unfazed as it outscored the Red Robins, 17-10, in the final period courtesy of Dionisio, Buno, and Thomas Velasquez.

Velasquez scattered 10 of his 12 points in the second half including five in the fourth quarter. He added four rebounds and three assists.

Defensively, Bryant Mendoza and Jumil Portales took charge in the paint with combined 15 rebounds.

Despite committing 36 turnovers, the Light Bombers made up in second-chance points by scoring 13 markers compared to the Red Robins’ six.

Roseler Sarias topscored with 16 points while Karl Mariano added 13 markers in an effort to give Malayan a rousing start, but their efforts went futile.
