Cagayan de Oro (CdO) stole the spotlight on Sunday night after five of its boxers barged into the gold-medal round of the Philippine Sports Commission-Manny Pacquiao Amateur Boxing Cup National Championships at the Mandaue City Sports & Cultural Center.
Kim Bryan Cabrillos bannered the finalists after scoring a knockout victory over April Boy Lampitao of Polomolok, South Cotabato in the last 25 seconds of the third round in the junior boys light bantam weight (52kgs) class.
Winning via split decisions (4-1) were Mark Lester Durens against Cebu’s Eduardo Jimenez in the junior boys light fly (48kgs), John Erl Palvino over Bago City’s Joshua Belicena in the junior boys fly (50kgs), John Ignatius Macas against Negros Occidental’s Geniel Alit in the youth boys fly (52kgs), and John Paul Panuayan over Cebu’s Jarah Hury Aragon in the youth boys light (60kgs) division.
Brothers Joven and Jobert Paala of Sultan Kudarat also resumed their respective title bids after scoring unanimous decision victories over General Santos’ Gabriel Dela Peña in the junior boys pin (44-46kgs) and Junel Miranda of Tayabas, Quezon in the youth boys fly (52kgs).
Jake Sone Saludar, youngest brother of 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games gold medalist Rey Saludar, also inched closer to the youth boys light fly (46-49kgs) crown after triumphing via split decision over Michael Adolfo of Cadiz, Negros Occidental.
Final bouts are ongoing at presstime.
The tournament is part of PSC’s grassroots program aimed at identifying future national team members.
