The Philippine women’s volleyball team salvaged a ninth-place finish at the 6th AVC Cup for Women Championship after beating Kazakhstan last night at the Korat Chatchai Hall in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.
The Nationals outplayed the Kazakhs, 25-13, 23-25, 25-222, 17-25, 15-8, to end their debut campaign in this biennial meet on a bright note.
The victory also reaffirmed the PH team’s mastery over Kazakhstan after duplicating their 25-22, 25-23, 20-25, 25-17 triumph in the preliminaries.
Mylene Paat was a revelation in this tournament as she bannered the squad with 18 points built on 12 kills, two blocks and four aces, while Alyssa Valdez and Cha Cruz contributed 17 and 16 points, respectively.
Valdez and Cruz also conspired at the attack line with 29 spikes, while Risa Sato and Mika Reyes each had two blocks.
The Filipina spikers pulled away from a slim 8-7 lead in the deciding fifth set by scoring seven of the last eight points including five from Cruz.
Kazakhstan settled for 10th and last place despite Diana Grokhotova and Dinara Syzdykova scoring 16 points each.
