The country’s youngest Woman Fide Master (WFM) Antonella Berthe “Tonelle” Murillo Racasa went down in defeat to one of the tournament’s highest-ranked players in an inauspicious start in the World Cadets Chess Championships yesterday in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Spain.
Playing white, the 11-year-old Racasa yielded to Abigail Riis Weersing of England after a marathon 97 moves of London System Opening in the girls 12 and under.
“Her (Antonella Berthe) opponent needed 97 moves to dismantle the tenacity of Antonella’s defense. There are more than 850 players competing in this prestigious event and their match ended up last after 5 1/2 hours of tumultuous battle. Bawi tayo bukas,” said Roberto Racasa, father and coach of Antonella Berthe.
Antonella Berthe will face Magdalena Schiopu-Oana (1526) of Romania in the next round.
