JRU standout Teytey Teodoro ended up taking the last roster spot for Barangay Ginebra, easing out Matt Salem after signing a one-conference deal.
The stocky guard has been practicing with Ginebra for a couple of weeks now and Teodoro is still adjusting to Tim Cone’s triangle offense.
“Medyo nag-aadjust pa ako kasi ngayon lang ako nakapag-ganun na system. I hope na ilang weeks pa na, matutunan ko pa ‘yung sistema ni Coach Tim,” said Teodoro.
Fresh from his first tune-up game with the team against the Phoenix Fuel Masters, he got the feel how the system works.
“Katulad kanina, medyo na-ano ko na ‘yung sistema ni Coach Tim. Medyo nalaman ko na lahat,” he said.
Teodoro admits that wearing a Gin King jersey is a childhood dream of his and he is willing to do whatever it takes to earn an extension with the team.
“Sobrang saya ko kasi nakasama ako sa Ginebra. Dream team ko ‘to eh. Ready lang ako to play,” Teodoro said.
Cone has high praises for the former JRU Bomber comparing him to two-time PBA MVP Willie Miller. Both players have the same stacked built and the outside shooting. Teodoro was grateful for the comparisons.
“Siguro naging maganda lang ‘yung pinakita ko sa practice sa kanya, sa kanila,” Teodoro said on the Miller comparisons. “So siguro medyo natuwa si Coach Tim sa akin and binigyan ako ng pag-asa.”
Entering each practice day with a student’s mindset, Teodoro is already maximizing what he can learn from his fellow guards on adjusting to the system and PBA type of play.
“Papaturo naman ako kela Kuya LA (Tenorio), Scottie Thompson, then siguro at saka ko na ilalabas ‘yung talagang game ko kung talagang nasusunod ko na ‘yung sistema ni Coach Tim,” he said.
Cracking the rotation of Cone is next for Teodoro. For now, his coach advised him to stay ready when he is called to play.
“Basta sa akin sinabi niya na ready to play ako, especially sa defense,” said Teodoro. “Kailangan ‘yung sistema niya ma-kabisado ko para d ako makaba pag pinasok niya ako sa game.”
On the other hand, Matt Salem was reportedly offered to be a practice player for Ginebra which he politely declined. Blackwater picked him up as a free agent and will parade with the Elite on opening night.
