The Philippines Special Olympics team brought home a total of 29 medals after participating in the recent Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019.
The contingent was composed of 39 Filipino athletes who saw action in eight sports in the seven-day event. The Philippines ended up with a tally of 9 gold, 10 silver, and 10 bronze medals. The games formally opened last March 14 at the Zayed Sports City Stadium.
Leading the delegation were Special Olympics Philippines National Board President Delia Ortega, Special Olympics Philippines National Sports Director Darwin Engracia and Special Olympics Philippines National Executive Director Kaye Chastine Samson.
The gold medal haul came from sports like athletics, bocce, gymnastics, futsal, and swimming.
Sheila Galvez bagged the gold medal in the Singles F23 event while Janice Trinidad and Aivie Dungca did the same for athletics and gymnastics respectively.
Other gold medal winners include Catherine Balang, Charisse Galvez, Erica Dulay, Erlinda Abellera, Florence Galvez, Monalyn Villanueva, Monica Mapalo and Rica Mae Ninobla of the Futsal team in their respective events.
Catherine Managay got a gold in Badminton while Noel Cartera in the 50m backstroke in swimming. Aprila Hermosa and Carmela Basas also won gold medals in rhythmic gymnastics.
The list of silver medal winners were led by Futsal players Althea Angel Padilla, Arby Luis Rillera, Eloisa Cabanit, Erica Mae Ordono, Florida Sales, Jocelyn May Intia, Jolnina Noto, Jovelyn Gacayan, Kristina Della and Lucky Sales.
Other silver medalists were Maria Theresa Colina (Rhythmic Gymnastics – Hoop), Alden Jimenez (Athletics – 200m run), James Del Rosario (Athletics – 200m run), Lemuel Batiloy (Badminton), Ryan Hasim (Bocce), Anna Ildesa, (Bowling), Cyrus Floyd Losbanes and Lemuel Batiloy (Badminton Doubles) and Joanna Yabes (Powerlifting – 2 medals).
Settling for the bronze medal were Alyssa Nicole Carino (Swimming – 50m backstroke), Joanna Yabes (Powerlifting), Perlita Teves (Athletics – 200m run), Mizzel Dawa (Bowling), Marlon Tindoc (Powerlifting), Aivie Dungca (Rhythmic Gymnastics – Hoop, Ball, Ribbon (3 medals)), SO Philippines Rhythmic Gymnastics, Rhythmic Group Hoop and Rhythmic Floor Exercise (2 medals).
