San Sebastian College-Recoletos guard Ken Villapando scored on a layup with 18.5 seconds remaining to lift the Stags past the Letran Knights in overtime, 102-101, and snap a three-game losing skid Tuesday in NCAA Season 95 at The Arena in San Juan.
The winning shot came after a missed jumper by Letran forward Jerrick Balanza triggered a fast break, with Allyn Bulanadi finding Villapando open at the right wing for an easy layup.
Letran had a chance to salvage the win but guard Fran Yu missed a three-point try with time winding down, and Edson Batillier’s desperation heave was short at the buzzer.
The win improved SSC-R’s record to 3-3, while Letran suffered its second straight loss following a setback to bitter rival and defending three-time champion San Beda last Saturday for a 5-3 card.
The victory was extra special for the Stags who didn’t just end their woes but fashioned the victory despite the absence of coach Egay Macaraya, who is out serving a one-game suspension.
“This is for coach Egay,” said SSC lead assistant coach Melo Banua, who has been with Macaraya since 2014 after playing for the former Stag with the CEU Scorpions during his college days.
“What coach Egay said before our game is to just stick to the game plan. We’ve been practicing the past two weeks; even if our games were cancelled we continued with our preparation. It actually gave us enough time to prepare for this game,” added Banua.
Larry Muyang, who led Letran with 32 points, hit two free throws with 16 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime 91-all.
RK Ilagan scored 22 points to lead SSC-R, which had three of its games postponed because of bad weather the previous two weeks. The Stags last played June 30 against the College of St. Benilde Blazers.
Bulanadi contributed 21 points while Alvin Capobres added 19 points for SSC-R, which had six of 13 players fouling – the last being Ilagan with 3:52 left in the extra period.
In the second game, Rey Peralta collected 19 points, while Ben Adamos had 11 points and 13 rebounds as University of Perpetual Help DALTA System downed Emilio Aguinaldo College, 88-87.
The win improved the Altas’ record to 3-5, and more importantly, gave interim coach Myk Saguiguit his first win as he took over from coach Frankie Lim, who is ‘on leave’ following a decision by school management.
