Dez Wells erupted for 42 points Thursday as San Miguel Beer dethroned last year’s winner Ryukyu Golden Kings of Japan, 101-92, Thursday to advance to the semifinals of the East Asia Super League Terrific 12 at the Tap Seac Pavilion in Macau.
Wells, set to play in the PBA Governors’ Cup, made 16-of-29 shots while adding six rebounds and three assists as the Beermen completed a two-game sweep of Group B.
Terrence Romeo scored 18 points and import Lester Prosper produced 15 points and eight rebounds for SMB, which arranged a semifinal duel with Group D winner Liaoning Flying Leopards on Saturday.
Liaoning, led by former NBA player Lance Stephenson and Tunisian national team star Salah Mejri, claimed top spot in Group D after winning all two games including one against TNT KaTropa.
Coach Leo Austria and the Beermen made it to the semis of the five-day tournament despite the absence of June Mar Fajardo, Alex Cabagnot and Marcio Lassiter due to injuries.
SMB opened the tournament by defeating Chinese club Shenzhen Aviators, 90-76, last Tuesday.
Import Demon Brooks scored a game-high 34 points but the Japanese side finished its campaign with a 0-2 slate.
Ryukyu suffered a 115-77 loss to Shenzhen the other night.
