The Philippine karate national team boosted its Southeast Asian (SEA) Games campaign after pocketing eight medals in 2019 Amatör Spor Haftasi Karate Championship in Sakaray, Turkey Sunday.
Jamie Lim, daughter of PBA legend Samboy Lim, led the squad after bagging a gold in senior female -68 kilogram kumite action. Miyuki Tacay captured silver in senior female -61kgs kumite.
Rexor Tacay copped silver in senior male -67kgs kumite while Ivan Augustin also notched silver in senior male -75kgs kumite.
Also joining the medal haul are Mae Soriano (bronze, senior female -55kgs kumite), Prince Alejo (bronze, senior male -67kgs kumite), Sharief Afif (bronze, senior male -75kgs kumite) and Eugene Dagohoy (bronze, senior male -84kgs kumite)
“Our karate team is right on track with their training,” Karate Pilipinas president Richard Lim said, as quoted by CNN Philippines.
He also assured the squad’s “best performance” in the upcoming SEA Games.
The team, with coach Okay Arpa, a former European and world champion, joined the tournament as part of its two-month training in Turkey ahead of the 30th regional meet this November. (Gabriela Baron)
